This is my latest pattern, it’s really pretty and a bit quirky. It is based on a traditional Irish crocheted lace motif – the wild-Irish-rose. This is one of the first Irish crochet lace motifs I learnt to make and I still love its delicacy. I have used a no.10 crochet cotton and a size 2mm (size 0) hook. The pattern is given for a three different sizes of purse; 4.5 (5.5) or (6.5) inches in diameter, 11.5 (14) (16.5) cm, but the purse expands further when full. The pattern gives instructions for three different sized purses. The pattern uses a couple of crocheted Irish lace techniques; like using a packing cord and crocheting around the back post. However, the pattern explains these techniques quite well and if that isn’t enough there are so many how-to videos now available that nothing is undoable anymore.

The following instructions work for all sizes of purse. To line the purse place the unblocked crochet on top of a doubled layer of fabric lining. Position the clasp, keep it ½ inch out from the crocheted piece. Draw a line 1½ inches out from the crocheted piece and below the clasp, and ⅝ of an inch out from the clasp, also draw a line to mark the position of the clasp. Cut the fabric along this outer line.
To make a French seam; with wrong sides together, sew an arc ¼ inch in from the edge of the lining, leaving the clasp area open. Trim the seam allowance to ⅛ of an inch. Turn the lining inside out, press seam in place. Sew the area below the clasp again, encasing the seam allowance, sew and arc ¼ inch in from the edge. Turn right side out and press seams.
Pin a doubled over seam along the clasp edges, as far in, as the marked position of the clasp. With a needle and thread sew the open edge of the crocheted bag to the lining. Now, tuck this seam edge inside the clasp, hiding the seam. Sew the purse onto the clasp using the same cotton yarn use for the purse. Sew through the holes of the clasp.
